Artificial Intelligence (AI) has continued to be one of the most talked-about advances in technology in the 21st Century. AI is used in many different areas of life but one of the most prominent and visible uses of AI is within video games. As you may know, the video game industry is a multi-billion industry founded on the idea that you can have fun with or without other people to play with. To make an entertaining single-player experience AI has been used in video games for years. In this article we are going to explore the most prominent uses of AI in the video game industry:
Borderlands 3
This game is based in a post-apocalyptic world where the players fight against different mobs of human, animal, or machine hybrids. What makes the AI in this game so unique is that there is a huge amount of variance in how they act. Depending on the type of enemy you’re fighting, they will act differently and independently of one another and will make strategic decisions like taking cover, running away when they are weak, hiding, and so on.
For Honor
This game has one of the most complex fighting systems I have ever seen. It’s a 3rd game that includes blocking, parrying, dodging, counter moves, dash attacks, and it’s all based on a timing system that requires very precise timing to trigger certain animations. The AIs in this game can not only compete with online players but they can be configured to fight using only certain types of moves or combinations for the player to practice in specific ways.
Online Chess
If you have ever played an AI in chess then you know they are almost unbeatable, even advanced chess players can have difficulty on the highest levels of AI chess players. When you think about the number of moves and combinations that can occur in a chess game, for the AI to be able to react effectively to all of those scenarios is very impressive.
Ark Survival Evolved
This game is based on the prehistoric man and his struggle to survive. This game features varying types of dinosaurs and each of these dinosaurs will exhibit a different type of behavior based on their type. For example, a T-rex will act much more aggressively than a herbivore will. Animals in the same tribe if attacked will fight to protect one another. Given the time this game was released, it demonstrates the ability to mimic many of the real-world behaviours of an animal in terms of aggression towards the player and even other animals.
